Myddelton House Gardens – a delightful place for a day out

One bright but chilly morning during 2011 Christmas holidays, we decided to visit one of the Heritage house/gardens. Well…You might think – December is not really ideal for visiting any heritage garden – there is not much green, let alone flowers. But we did and we enjoyed it! We basically googled for some place not very far from Harrow. We found the Myddelton House Gardens near Enfield. The Garden is the head quarters to Lee Valley Regional Park.

The house was once home to one of Britain’s most famous self-taught gardeners, artists and expert botanists – Edward Augustus Bowles. He dedicated much of his life to transforming the gardens with his love of unusual and exotic plants.

The exotic plants collection in the garden is any botanist’s delight. The garden has a beautiful carp lake, a conservatory and a number of historical artefacts collected and treasured by Mr. Bowles, including pieces from the original St Paul’s Cathedral and the Enfield Market Cross. The 109-year-old Wisteria plant, believed to be the oldest living climber in the garden, is really an interesting feature. The garden is supposed be one of the best places for snowdrop blossom.

The garden has a small but sufficient visitor center with an exhibition room which displays some artefacts and information relating to Mr. Bowles, his family and the gardens he created. You can also pick up tourism leaflets of the surrounding areas. The car park and the entry to gardens are free.

If you fancy a short stroll in the garden and a little lake side picnic, perhaps this is the place to go this Spring/Summer. We’ll be going for sure!
